To work as a travel counsellor in BC, you may choose to pursue certification and/or membership with the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA). Contact or visit the association's webpage to view the various membership levels or to enroll in certification examinations. 

To work as a tourism professional in BC, you may choose to receive tourism training from emerit created by Tourism HR Canada.

To work as a tour or travel guide in BC, you may need to have basic first aid and CPR certification. Eligibilty is achieved by completing a revelant course.

To work as a hot air balloon pilot in BC, you must complete ground school, practical experience, and be licensed by Transport Canada.

Outdoor sport and recreational guides

Operators and attendants in amusement, recreation and sport

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to develop and manage park facilities and other indoor and outdoor recreation and leisure facilities. These programs include courses in supervising support personnel, health and safety standards, public relations, and basic business and marketing principles.

Parks, recreation, and leisure facilities management, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the psychological, sociological, and historical aspects of sport and physical activity. These programs include courses in theory of sport, sport psychology, sport in society, gender and race/ethnicity and sport, and sports history.

Sports studies

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to manage travel-related enterprises and related convention and/or tour services. These programs include courses in travel agency management, tour arranging and planning, convention and event planning, travel industry operations and procedures, tourism marketing and promotion strategies, travel counselling, travel industry law, international and domestic operations, and travel and tourism policy.

Sports officials and referees observe and enforce rules and regulations governing sporting events, athletic games and sports competitions. They are employed by national, provincial and local sporting commissions, organizations and leagues.

Travel counsellors advise clients on travel options and tour packages, make bookings and reservations, prepare tickets and receive payment. They are employed in travel agencies, transportation and tourism firms and hotel chains.

Tour and travel guides escort individuals and groups on trips, on sightseeing tours of cities and on tours of historical sites and establishments such as famous buildings, manufacturing plants, cathedrals and theme parks. They also provide descriptions and background information on interesting features. They are employed by tour operators, resorts and other establishments or may be self-employed.

Outdoor sport and recreational guides organize and conduct trips or expeditions for sports enthusiasts, adventurers, tourists and resort guests. They are employed by private companies and resorts or may be self-employed.

Operators and attendants in amusement, recreation and sport assist patrons, collect tickets and fees and supervise the use of recreational and sports equipment. They are employed by amusement parks, fairs, exhibitions, carnivals, arenas, billiard parlours, bowling alleys, golf courses, ski centres, tennis clubs, campgrounds and other recreational and sports facilities.

The  Tourism and Hospitality Associate Certificate focuses on the business of tourism and will prepare you for a role in B.C.’s tourism industry. You'll also develop a solid understanding of core business concepts including marketing, finance, and leadership. 

Tourism and Hospitality: Associate Certificate (Part-Time)

This Adventure Tourism Business Operations (ATBO) Certificate focuses on business skills you need to work in the tourism industry or to start your own tourism business, including entrepreneurship, marketing, sustainability and business training. Your ATBO instructors are highly skilled guides in avalanche safety, rock climbing, mountaineering, whitewater kayaking, backcountry skiing, backpacking, canoeing, and sea kayaking. This program includes the latest industry-developed training material, and includes BC provincially-endorsed programs’ standards.

The Recreation Management Certificate prepares you for a career in operations, athletic development, facility management, recreation programming and many other specialty fields. We provide you with the business know-how, management skills and related specialty courses.

Recreation Management Certificate

The Tourism Management Certificate prepares you for a career in resorts, hotels, and other tourism operations. The program includes courses in tourism, business management, and related specialty courses. You can choose to take the certificate completely online and work while going to school – or you can take the program in person at our Cranbrook campus. Industry-recognized certifications in the program include Foodsafe, Worldhost, CPR-C, Occupational First Aid Level 1, and Serving it Right. You will have the opportunity to participate in a work placement to gain hands-on experience in a tourism related business.

Tourism Management Certificate

The Tourism & Hospitality Management Certificate provides a broad understanding of the business skills necessary to compete effectively in the marketplace. Students will participate in field trips to top local and regional hotels and resorts to learn from industry professionals and apply program concepts and skill into practice.
