Secondary school teachers

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to teach students in the secondary grades, which may include grades seven through twelve, depending on the school system and applicable regulations. May include preparation to teach a comprehensive curriculum or specific subject matter.

Secondary education and teaching

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to teach students at more than one educational level, such as a combined program in elementary/secondary, early childhood/elementary, elementary/middle school, or junior high/high school teacher education.

Teacher education, multiple levels

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the principles and practice of teaching French to students who are not proficient in French or who do not speak, read, or write French, and prepares individuals to serve as teachers and administrators.

Secondary Education Bachelor's Degrees

School principals plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of teachers and other staff of an elementary or secondary school. They are employed by public and private schools. Administrators of elementary and secondary education plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the academic affairs of a school system. They are employed by school boards.

Secondary school teachers prepare and teach academic, technical, vocational or specialized subjects at public and private secondary schools. Secondary school teachers who are heads of departments are included in this unit group.

The Bachelor of Education degree prepares you to teach students in kindergarten to grade 7 in BC and Alberta. Your courses have been designed to be engaging, relevant and practical and will give you a wide-ranging introduction to all the subjects you will be required to teach. For your first year, you will enroll at College of the Rockies in first-year university-level courses. For the remaining three years, you will be enrolled in University of Victoria courses but receive your instruction, in the classroom, at the Cranbrook campus.

The Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree is designed for those who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree and are admitted to one of SFU's Teacher Education programs. You'll complete the Professional Development Program and can take minors in areas like counselling and human development, early learning, environmental education, French education, secondary teaching, and more. You'll also have the option to partake in a field school. Completion of the program gives you a recognized international credential that allows you to teach abroad.

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Degree prepares you to teach science and mathematics in the context of engineering and technology in secondary school settings. You will qualify for a professional teaching certificate from the BC Ministry of Education, Teacher Certification Branch (TCB). The program includes foundation courses in education, methods courses, and practica. Upon graduation from the STEM program, you will have two degrees: the Bachelor's degree in science or mathematics required for entry into this program and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree.

The Bachelor of Education in Trades and Technology allows you to bring your skills from the worksite and lead a classroom as a trades and technology high school teacher. Prepare for teaching with course topics like classroom information technology, adolescent learning and development, literacy across content areas, practicums and more.

The Bachelor's of Education Degree, Secondary - French are mostly taught in French. Practica occur in French immersion, in regular schools offering core French, or in Francophone schools. Learning content in French allows you to continue to develop your French proficiency during the year. You may combine French with another teaching subject concentration (e.g., Spanish or Biology).

Education Secondary- French Cohort: Bachelor Degree (UBCV)

The Bachelor's Degree in Education, Secondary prepares you to teach one or two teachable subjects in Grades 8 to 12 as a secondary school teacher. During this program, you are introduced to adolescent development and prepared methodologically to teach your subject(s).  In addition to coursework, you'll take part in practicums and Community Field Experiences to put the theory and skills you've learned to practice. After graduation, you may go on to teach in local, rural, or international schools, or may apply your skills to careers outside of schools, such as in arts organizations, science centres, non-profit organizations, and others.

Education Secondary: Bachelor Degree (UBCV)

The Dual Degree Bachelor in Education is completed in five years with reduced credits rather than the traditional four years plus one year degree path to the BEd degree. After completing all the requirements, students will be eligible for a British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate.

The Bachelor of Education provides an understanding of a variety of approaches to teaching and learning and work alongside educators on campus, in schools and in the community. You will participate in practical experience inside and outside the classroom, including two school-based practicums and a 15-week internship.

This Indigenous Teacher Education Program addresses educational issues pertinent to public and First Nations schools settings where Indigenous children attend school. The first two to three years are offered through a regional field centre so that teacher candidates can remain near their home community to maintain their family and cultural connections. You’ll develop the skills and academic knowledge expected of beginning educators, complete a specialization in Indigenous Education, partake in practicums and field schools, and prepare to teach at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level. 

Indigenous Teacher Education Program NITEP Elementary/Middle and Secondary Options (UBCV)

The Bachelor of Music in General Studies is designed to provide a broad, flexible, general higher education in music, including private lessons on the instrument that you play best. You'll have the freedom to choose many elective courses, allowing continuation into various professional options, including graduate degrees. In the Elementary Education Stream, you'll prepare for studies in education leading to certification as a music teacher in BC secondary schools.

The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to develop the professional qualities and effective practices for teaching in today’s complex learning environments with a strong focus on community, collaboration, and innovation.

West Kootenay Teacher Education Program WKTEP (UBCV)

The Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education prepares you to to teach in grades 8 through 12 in specialty areas, particularly in BC's northern rural and remote schools. You'll join a cohort of teacher candidates that normally begin and finish the program together. Focus is placed on the integration of literacy and numeracy skills, inquiry-based learning, inclusion of diverse learners' perspectives, and topics like how Aboriginal and Indigenous education or Truth and Reconciliation have an impact on teaching and learning practices and approaches. The BEd program provides you with the coursework and practical classroom experience to prepare them to be qualified teachers.

Education Secondary (Grades 8 - 12): Bachelor's Degree

The Bachelor of Education Degree prepares you for a career as an elementary, middle school, or secondary school teacher. You'll complete foundational courses in diversity, special education, Indigenous youth and schooling, planning and assessment, reflective practice, and classroom management, as well as subject-specific methods courses. Later, you'll study unit planning and construction, professional development, action research, and more. You'll also complete multiple practicums to put theory into practice. Upon successful completion of the program, you are recommended to the Ministry of Education to receive a B.C. teaching certificate through the Teacher Regulation Branch.

The Indigenous Education post-degree professional program is designed to enhance relational accountabilities with local indigenous people and communities. It provides aspiring teachers (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous) with a relevant, relational, and transformative education designed to foster a deeper understanding of First Nations, Inuit and Métis histories, cultures, and ways of knowing and being.

Indigenous: Post-Degree Professional (PDPP): Bachelor of Education

In the Teacher Education Secondary Curriculum Post-Degree Professional Program Bachelor of Education Degree, you'll learn how you can motivate secondary school students to find deeper meaning from the world. After completion of all coursework and a mandatory practicum, you will receive a Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) and will be eligible to apply for a BC teaching certificate.

The Bachelor of Education program provides you with the fundamentals needed to become teachers at the elementary or secondary school level. Throughout the program you will learn diverse teaching strategies and professional development skills to give them the tools and knowledge required to earn their BC teachers certificate and begin their teaching journey. The program is comprised of undergraduate Education coursework and from various disciplines including the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Human Services as well as field work experience.
