These programs include courses in the basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, examination and diagnosis, patient communications, medical ethics and laws, professional standards, and rotations in specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, neurology, ophthalmology, radiology, clinical pathology, anesthesiology, family medicine, and psychiatry.

Medicine (MD)

Managers in health care plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the delivery of health care services, such as diagnosis and treatment, nursing and therapy, within institutions, and in other settings, that provide health care services. They are employed in hospitals, medical clinics, nursing homes and other health care organizations.

Specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine diagnose and treat diseases and physiological or psychiatric disorders and act as consultants to other physicians. Specialists in laboratory medicine study the nature, cause and development of diseases in humans. Specialists in clinical medicine usually work in private practice or in a hospital while those in laboratory medicine usually work in hospitals. Residents in training to become specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine are included in this unit group.

Specialists in surgery perform and supervise surgical procedures. Specialists in surgery usually work in hospitals. Residents in training to become specialists in surgery are included in this unit group.

General practitioners and family physicians diagnose and treat the diseases, physiological disorders and injuries of patients. They provide primary contact and continuous care toward the management of patients' health. They usually work in private practice, including group or team practices, hospitals and clinics. Residents in training to be general practitioners or family physicians are included in this unit group.

The Doctor of Medicine Degree equips you with the knowledge, training, and experience needed to meet the health care challenges of today and tomorrow. In Years three and four, you will participate in clinical to develop clinical skills through various initiatives and hands-on learning. 

Medicine: Doctor Degree (UBCO)

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) equips you with the knowledge, training, and experience you need to meet the health care challenges of today and tomorrow. As an MD student, you'll work alongside faculty members and physicians to learn the foundations of medicine and patient-centred care, while honing your clinical skills at hospital wards, community clinics, and doctors’ offices in urban and rural settings across British Columbia. During the clinical years of the program (years three and four), you’ll work in hospital wards, community clinics, and doctors’ offices across BC, meeting patients and working closely with a wide range of health professionals. You'll also have the opportunity to partake in a variety of initiatives to further develop your skills. Graduates have successfully secured medical residency positions in areas ranging from family medicine and pediatrics, to cardiology and emergency medicine.

The Doctor of Medicine Northern Medical Program (NMP) is a distributed site of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine MD Undergraduate Program, delivered in partnership with UNBC. The NMP is focused on training physicians from and for northern and rural communities. The NMP incorporates the practices of rural and remote medical education from around the world, providing classroom and early clinical exposure to rural healthcare delivery. You'll have the chance to undertake numerous rural health and northern living experiences as part of extracurricular shadowing opportunities, Indigenous cultural experiences, and NMP/student social activities.
