Educational counsellors

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the design and implementation of instructional and advising services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students at various learning levels and that prepares individuals to perform teaching and administrative functions. These programs include courses in the cultural traditions and social patterns, history and politics, learning styles and issues, curriculum design and minority education strategies, counselling techniques and social issues, rural education services, distance education, adult education techniques, school administration, applicable laws and regulations, and research issues.

Indigenous education

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to teach students at more than one educational level, such as a combined program in elementary/secondary, early childhood/elementary, elementary/middle school, or junior high/high school teacher education.

Teacher education, multiple levels

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to teach specific vocational trades and industries programs at various educational levels.

Government managers in education policy development and program administration plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the development and administration of elementary, secondary and post-secondary education policies and programs. They are employed by all levels of government.

School principals plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of teachers and other staff of an elementary or secondary school. They are employed by public and private schools. Administrators of elementary and secondary education plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the academic affairs of a school system. They are employed by school boards.

Secondary school teachers prepare and teach academic, technical, vocational or specialized subjects at public and private secondary schools. Secondary school teachers who are heads of departments are included in this unit group.

Elementary school and kindergarten teachers teach basic subjects such as reading, writing and arithmetic or specialized subjects such as English or French as a second language at public and private elementary schools.

Educational counsellors advise current and prospective students on educational issues, career planning and personal development, and coordinate the provision of counselling services to students, parents, teachers, faculty and staff. They are employed by school boards and post-secondary educational institutions.

Pre-education Certificates

The Bachelor of Education degree prepares you to teach students in kindergarten to grade 7 in BC and Alberta. Your courses have been designed to be engaging, relevant and practical and will give you a wide-ranging introduction to all the subjects you will be required to teach. For your first year, you will enroll at College of the Rockies in first-year university-level courses. For the remaining three years, you will be enrolled in University of Victoria courses but receive your instruction, in the classroom, at the Cranbrook campus.

Education: Bachelor's Degree (COTR/UVic)

The Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree is designed for those who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree and are admitted to one of SFU's Teacher Education programs. You'll complete the Professional Development Program and can take minors in areas like counselling and human development, early learning, environmental education, French education, secondary teaching, and more. You'll also have the option to partake in a field school. Completion of the program gives you a recognized international credential that allows you to teach abroad. 

Education as a Second Bachelor Degree: Bachelor of Education

The Bachelor of Education in Trades and Technology allows you to bring your skills from the worksite and lead a classroom as a trades and technology high school teacher. Prepare for teaching with course topics like classroom information technology, adolescent learning and development, literacy across content areas, practicums and more.

Trades and Technology: Bachelor of Education Degree

The Dual Degree Bachelor in Education is completed in five years with reduced credits rather than the traditional four years plus one year degree path to the BEd degree. After completing all the requirements, students will be eligible for a British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate.

The Bachelor of Education provides an understanding of a variety of approaches to teaching and learning and work alongside educators on campus, in schools and in the community. You will participate in practical experience inside and outside the classroom, including two school-based practicums and a 15-week internship.

The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program (WKTEP) has a strong focus on rural and small school settings, recognizing that they offer educational opportunities for teachers. There is also an emphasis on place-conscious learning with strong ties to local communities and school districts. The West Kootenay Rural Teacher Education Program provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to develop the professional qualities and effective practices for teaching in today’s complex learning environments with a strong focus on community, collaboration, and innovation.

West Kootenay Teacher Education Program WKTEP (UBCV)

The Bachelor of Education Degree prepares you for a career as an elementary, middle school, or secondary school teacher. You'll complete foundational courses in diversity, special education, Indigenous youth and schooling, planning and assessment, reflective practice, and classroom management, as well as subject-specific methods courses. Later, you'll study unit planning and construction, professional development, action research, and more. You'll also complete multiple practicums to put theory into practice. Upon successful completion of the program, you are recommended to the Ministry of Education to receive a B.C. teaching certificate through the Teacher Regulation Branch.

Education Bachelor (BEd)

The Indigenous Education post-degree professional program is designed to enhance relational accountabilities with local indigenous people and communities. It provides aspiring teachers (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous) with a relevant, relational, and transformative education designed to foster a deeper understanding of First Nations, Inuit and Métis histories, cultures, and ways of knowing and being.

Indigenous: Post-Degree Professional (PDPP): Bachelor of Education

The Bachelor of Education program provides you with the fundamentals needed to become teachers at the elementary or secondary school level. Throughout the program you will learn diverse teaching strategies and professional development skills to give them the tools and knowledge required to earn their BC teachers certificate and begin their teaching journey. The program is comprised of undergraduate Education coursework and from various disciplines including the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Human Services as well as field work experience.
