Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to assist a teacher in regular classroom settings or in providing instruction and supervision to special student populations, such as bilingual/bicultural students, special education students, adult learners, and students learning English. Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants support students, and assist teachers and counsellors with teaching and non-instructional tasks. They assist in areas of personal care, teaching and behaviour management under the supervision of teachers or other child care professionals. They are employed in public and private elementary, secondary and special needs schools and treatment centres.

The Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate prepares you to support individuals with acquired and or developmental disabilities both ethically and professionally in the context of home, school, work, and community settings. You'll also develop a practice framework that supports the rights of individuals with diverse needs, reflects a social model of disability and embraces a strengths based philosophy. Education Assistants work under the supervision of classroom or resource teachers to support you with exceptionalities and challenges in elementary and secondary education settings. The program builds the knowledge and skills you need to work as part of an educational team, supporting the integration and education of students with exceptionalities and challenges into a regular school classroom. The program explores the definition colonization and the effects of colonization on Indigenous education realities in Canada and B.C. The program also focuses on traditional Indigenous parenting models, effects of colonization on Indigenous parenting and parent/family/community relationships with the school. 

The Education Assistant Certificate prepares you as a classroom education assistant, assisting children with disabilities in school settings through in-class learning and practicum learning. The program is designed for practicing Education Assistants and those who want to work towards becoming Education Assistants. It enhances competence in inclusion, supporting literacy, human diversity; learning and support strategies; communication; school, community, and relationships; and professional practice and accountability.

The Education Assistant (EA) Certificate prepares you for a career in supporting students with diverse needs in K-12 classrooms. Courses have been designed to incorporate a high degree of discussion and interaction between students, and instructors are actively involved in guiding learning. In addition to your coursework, you will have the opportunity to participate in supervised, hands-on practice in public or private K-12 classrooms through school-based practicum placements.

Graduates work with Kindergarten through Grade 12 students and assist teachers in providing personal care and behavioural and learning support to a variety of students in public and independent schools. There is a high demand for Education Assistants and they are employed by every school district throughout the province. The graduates work in a variety of settings, including regular classrooms, resource rooms, work experience sites, and in life-skills activities. To integrate the knowledge and skills learned in the program, all students complete two four-week, full-time practicums in the schools over the course of their studies, one in an elementary school and one in a secondary school. During this time, a student will observe, assist, and work with children and adolescents with diverse needs under the guidance and supervision of professional staff. 

The Education Assistant Certificate prepares you for career opportunities in the education system working alongside teachers supporting students with disabilities as Education Assistants, combining a range of courses that provide theoretical foundation and practical experiences. You'll study the areas of learning, development, communication, curriculum, behaviour, personal care, and teamwork. Opportunities to apply theoretical material occur during two three-week, full-time practicum experiences in Terms One and Two, and in May during a four-week, full-time practicum.

The Education Assistant certificate prepares learners to support children and youth with diverse abilities in British Columbia K-12 classroom settings. The program provides blended theoretical, practical, and experiential learning while enabling you to document and synthesize their professional development through an Integrative Learning Portfolio. You will complete a practica within their communities allowing for practical applicaiton of classroom learning.

The Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate allows you to develop the skills to work with people who have exceptional needs, helping them acquire educational, social, vocational, recreational and personal life skills. This employment-ready eight-month certificate will prepare you for a career working in schools and community agencies. Students who complete the program may choose to ladder directly into year 2 of the Human Services Diploma program.

Earning a certificate in Workplace Education can help you qualify to become a trainer in your own field or industry.
