Early childhood educator assistants provide care for infants and preschool- to school-age children under the guidance of early childhood educators. The Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) Certificate is designed to prepare You with the necessary skills, knowledge and learning dispositions to be provincially certified as an early childhood educator with a specialty in the care and education of infants and toddlers. The program focuses on transforming thinking about the education of young children away from the provision of set content to the process of nurturing creative thinking, problem-solving and relationships with and between children. Theory is brought to life through experiential and place-based learning. The program challenges learners to co-create curriculum with children and to design learning environments that embrace the diversity of all children and families including local First Nations, Aboriginal and Inuit peoples.

This program also includes a practicum, where you will correspond with your instructor online but receive your practicum experience in a face-to-face work setting. If you choose to work as an Early Childhood Educator, you should: be caring and have the desire to make a difference in the lives of children, be comfortable providing fair but firm discipline, and have strong communication skills with children and parents of various cultural backgrounds

The Early Childhood Education Certificate is a combination of practical experience and theoretical material, which will give you the skills and knowledge to work with children from newborns to eight years old. Through online classes, you'll learn to observe, assess and guide child development both individually and in groups. You'll learn to communicate and collaborate with children, caregivers, their community and your colleagues, and understand how to promote health and nutrition, and experience managing a child-care setting. Graduates with an ECE certification can apply for a provincial license to practice as an Early Childhood Educator and work in provincially licensed preschool and child-care centres. You’ll also have the option to complete additional courses to qualify for a Special Needs Certificate and receive your ECE Diploma. 

The Early Childhood Education Infant/Toddler Post-Basic Certificate focuses on observing, assessing, planning and guiding the development of these children, both individually and in groups. You'll learn how to manage the operation of a child-care setting and how to confidently communicate and collaborate with children, families and your colleagues all through interactive online classes. Through a practicum placement, you'll experience learning from theory to practice in a variety of early childhood education settings, including childcare, preschool and others. Graduates are qualified to apply for a provincial license to practise as an Infant/Toddler Educator. This infant toddler certificate program is for certificate graduates from an accredited ECE program in B.C. who want an additional post-basic credential in Infant/Toddler ECE.

The Early Childhood Education (ECE): Special Needs and Inclusive Practices Inclusive Practices Post-Basic Certificate gives you the skills to assess and guide child development, promote health and nutrition, communicate and collaborate with children and caregivers, and manage a child-care setting. A combination of practicum experience and theoretical material will give you the skills and knowledge to work with children from newborns to eight years old with special needs in an early childhood education setting. You’ll graduate qualified to apply for a provincial license to practise as a Special Needs Educator and work in provincially licensed preschool and child-care centres. This program is for certificate graduates from an accredited ECE program in B.C. who want an additional post-basic credential in ECE Special Needs. 

Early Childhood Education: Special Needs - Inclusive Practices Post-Basic Certificate

The Early Childhood Education Certificate prepares you to work with young children, families, and community partners through a curriculum that is rooted in inclusive practice that advocates for responsive care and education for all children. In addition to your courses, you'll have a variety of practicum experiences. Upon graduation, you could be employed in inclusive childcare centres, Strong Start programs, and community based nonprofit organizations supporting children and families. 

The Indigenous Early Childhood Education (IECE) program provides students with the skills and knowledge to provide quality care and education for young children. The IECE certificate honours Indigenous ways of knowing and being by placing local and traditional child development practices at the center of the program and by preparing Early Childhood Educators to work with children in the community in which they reside.

Students will participate in 500 hours of work experience through a variety of practicum experiences. This allows students to explore different models of child care and different early learning environments. Priority admissions given to students of Indigenous ancestry. 

Early Childhood Care & Education Certificate (NIC)

The Early Childhood Education Certificate program prepares students to work with young children in a variety of early learning and care environments. Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work with children, families and the community in planning enriched programs in daycares, preschools and other early childhood initiatives that focus upon healthy development throughout the early years.

The Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Certificate focuses on many facets of early learning and child development, focusing on the needs of children from birth through school age and their families. As part of this certificate program, you will learn how to develop programs and create environments that are child-centred, nurturing and rich with potential for early development. You will be prepared to work with young children and their families in a variety of exciting and rewarding roles. You will be able to participate in the planning and delivery of programs that focus upon healthy child development and develop relationships within the field of early care and learning.

The Early Childhood Education Certificate is designed for students who are coming out of high school, and those already in the workforce. The four-semester program takes you through basic courses in communication, interpersonal growth, human development, and the early childhood curriculum. You'll also complete a practicum to put your classroom learning into practice. After completing the program and obtaining a first aid certificate, you can apply to the Provincial Licensing Board of B.C. for a basic license as an early childhood educator.
