To work as a correctional officer in Canada, you need to complete the Correctional Training program through Correctional Service Canada. Eligibility is achieved by passing a series of assessments and then successfully completing the program.

Criminal justice and corrections

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to perform the duties of police and public security officers, including patrol and investigative activities, traffic control, crowd control and public relations, witness interviewing, evidence collection and management, basic crime prevention methods, weapon and equipment operation and maintenance, report preparation and other routine law enforcement responsibilities.

Criminal Justice Certificates

Correctional service officers guard offenders and detainees and maintain order in correctional institutions and other places of detention. Primary workers develop women offender's correctional plan and work with other service officers in the correctional team. They are employed by federal, provincial and municipal governments. Correctional service officers who are supervisors are included in this unit group.

The Criminal and Social Justice Certificate prepares you for a potential career in the field of criminal or social justice or to further post-secondary education such as a bachelor degree. In this program, you will study theories of human and social behavior, criminal justice system and cultural and institutional roots of crime and deviance; learn about oppression and marginalization and will further their understanding of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous knowledge; and develop effective skills in cross-cultural relations, communication, conflict resolution and crisis intervention.

Criminal and Social Justice Certificate

The Criminology Diploma focuses on the criminal justice system and the complex problems encountered in the criminal justice field and deepen your knowledge of the processes and structures of the Canadian justice system. You’ll learn from instructors who have experience on the front lines as lawyers, youth workers, police officers, policy makers and psychologists. Upon graduation, you can seek further education in the fields of criminology, psychology, forensic science or similar, or start your career in areas such as the government, educational institutions or the non-profit sector.

Criminal Justice Studies Certificate

The Community and Public Safety Professional Certificate prepares you for a career in the public safety sector. The program will introduce you to a variety of opportunities including but not limited to, policing, corrections, border services, conservation, bylaw, sheriff, SPCA, coroner, Fisheries and Ocean Canada, probation, military, and commercial vehicle safety. As you explore the various professions in the sector, you will also examine the complex socio-historical relationship between Canada and Indigenous people, thus challenging beliefs and assumptions about present day relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, specifically in the criminal justice system.

Community and Public Safety Professional Certificate

The Police Studies Certificate is about various aspects of crime, from causes to effects, from policing methods to the criminal justice system. You'll study forensics, cybercrime, offenders, accountability and ethics.
