To practice as a civil engineering technologist or technician in BC, you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited diploma program and 24 months of progressive work experience, 12 of which must be at the technologist profile or higher in a Canadian work environment.

Civil engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services to scientists, engineers and other professionals, or may work independently in fields such as structural engineering, municipal engineering, construction design and supervision, highways and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental protection. They are employed by consulting engineering and construction companies, public works, transportation and other government departments and in many other industries.

The  Civil Engineering Diploma focuses on engineering fundamentals that will prepare you for a career working on the planning, design and construction of municipal works, residential development, industrial and commercial buildings, highways, environmental protection work and other types of projects. Optional co-operative work terms provide additional industry-sponsored experience. This comprehensive program incorporates sustainability, specialized computer applications, technical writing, team work and critical thinking skills required for employment.





Civil Engineering Technology Diploma

The 2-year Civil Engineering Technology provides theoretical and practical knowledge to support their work within the broad field of Civil Engineering. Courses will be delivered with components of face-to-face classroom instruction, computer-aided design and modelling, field surveying, and experimental laboratory testing. You will develop an understanding of the engineering principles used to perform structural, hydraulic, municipal, transportation, and construction materials design. Effective technical communication and project management skills are emphasized throughout the program.

The Civil Engineering Technology Diploma is about the design and construction of integral infrastructure as it relates to the function of cities and urban areas. You'll also gain the knowledge and skills to work on the design and construction of various sustainable infrastructure, from roads to parks, drainage to sewer plants. During the program, you'll partake in field trips to reinforce theoretical background, and to develop appropriate methods of approach and solution. Upon graduation, you'll have skills in surveying, drafting, computing, laboratory testing, construction inspection and structural design of steel, reinforced concrete, and more.
