To work as a social worker in BC, you may choose to become certified through the BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW). Eligibility is achieved through completion of an approved post-secondary program, criminal record checks, and successful writing of a licensure exam.

Social and community service workers

This instructional program class comprises any general program that focuses on basic human developmental and behavioural characteristics of the individual within the context of the family. These programs include courses in the conditions that influence human growth and development; strategies that promote growth and development across the lifespan; and the study of family systems.

Human development and family studies, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to plan, manage, and implement social services for children, youth, and families. These programs include courses in child development and psychology, adolescence, family studies, social work, social services administration, juvenile and family law, program and facilities planning, youth leadership, counselling, probation, casework, applicable procedures, and regulations, and professional standards and ethics.

Child Youth Care Diplomas

Social and community service workers administer and implement a variety of social assistance programs and community services, and assist clients to deal with personal and social problems. They are employed by social service and government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, shelters, substance abuse centres, school boards, correctional facilities and other establishments.

The Child and Youth Care Diploma gives you the skills to make a difference in the life of a child or adolescent dealing with abuse, neglect, addiction or family breakdown and who may have behavioural or learning difficulties. Once you graduate, you’ll be qualified for frontline positions working directly with children and youth in schools, community centres, parent-child education settings, residential settings, programs for street-involved youth, addictions services and more. 

Child and Youth Care Diploma

The  Child and Youth Care Diploma program prepares you to be skilled in working with individuals, their families and small groups across a variety of practice settings. General practice in these settings calls for individuals who are willing and able to work cooperatively with other community professionals, and in a variety of multi-disciplinary settings (schools, community, corrections facilities, residential settings). Aboriginal ways of knowing and cultural competency skills are highlighted throughout the curriculum.
